FACING YOUR FEAR

The idea that you can be FEARLESS is a blatant lie. If you’re human, you experience fears. From an evolutionary standpoint, fears are what have kept our species alive and kicking all these years. So it’s not about completely obliterating fears altogether, putting on our “tough guy” pants and pretending we’re a bunch of fearless robots; rather, it’s about learning how to face our fears, understanding where they’re coming from, and then deciding if they’re worth overriding or not.

It’s been said that at all times we’re either living from FEAR or LOVE, and that everything else is an offshoot of these two powerful forces. We believe that the bravest among us, those we celebrate and the unsung heroes who we never hear about, are those who recognize the fear and choose to override it for the sake of their commitments. Ladies and gents, fear is here to stay. It is an absolute myth that anyone can be 100 percent fearless; however, what can and does happen is that we change our relationship with fear, becoming friends with it and converting it into excitement that can propel us forward.

In our teachings, we like to think of fear as a sign—a big flashing neon sign saying “CHECK THIS OUT!” Once we see the sign, we can look deeper into what it’s trying to tell us. Often fear is trying to tell us one of two things: a major breakthrough is right around the corner and it feels scary because it’s a total paradigm buster OR run like hell, this is no good for you. If you can decipher whether this fear you’re feeling is because you’re on the brink of magic or at the edge of disaster, you can navigate those feelings powerfully.

One example most of us have in common is learning how to walk. When we first tried to walk, the prospect of falling and getting scraped up was a real threat; but no matter how clumsy we were and no matter how many times we fell, once we truly understood that every stumble gave us insight on how to stand stronger the next time, we eventually learned how to walk gracefully (some more gracefully than others!) and never looked back. What once seemed super-scary and downright impossible is now something we don’t even think about, all because we chose to face our fear and continue to override it until it passed.

Once we finally work up the courage to face our fears, what once seemed impossible turns into I’m possible; we realize it was never as bad as we’d imagined it to be. However, if we continue to be afraid of something, the fear often gets so big and so ridiculously out of control that we become completely paralyzed by it.
